3rd Album Deluxe - Bill Levenson drops a hint?
Re: 3rd Album Deluxe - Bill Levenson drops a hint?
I'm suggesting Simon may be mistaken re the comparative merits of Ps&S and Live 68. Arrow means "in my opinion is better than"

The open end of the arrow means greater than. I don't recall whether Peel sounds better than Live '68, but he's correct that Problems sounds worse than either.Mark wrote:I'm suggesting Simon may be mistaken re the comparative merits of Ps&S and Live 68. Arrow means "in my opinion is better than"
Re: 3rd Album Deluxe - Bill Levenson drops a hint?
Live68 sounds best, and is from the master. My understanding from what Ive read over the years is that the most Polydor got hold of was a 2nd generation tape, so this is likely what the PSAS version is from. Hopefully since then Universal have managed to get hold of the master tape for a future release in the bootleg series..............
Meantime is there any chance that someone with a better tape than problems in urban living could upload it for the rest of us?

Re: 3rd Album Deluxe - Bill Levenson drops a hint?
I would agree that that Live 68 is the best sounding available source for this material. I would also say that whoever compiled it has access to the original material in that it uses songs from more than 1 show (or set?).
I've come across various different cassette versions, but I dont think any of them came close to Live 68 in terms of quality. It's never been quite clear whether the extant material is from 2 sets or 2 shows. The most common cassette versions which, on the face of it, contain 1 complete set (or show) all sound "muddy" compared to Live 68, and originally circulated as "2nd October 1968". I have several copies like that, including the one issued by the VUAS. These versions were all in general circulation in the late 1970s/early 1980s (I got my first copy in 1981). Later in the 1980s, a "new" version appeared - it contained songs from both sets (or shows) and seemed to be closer to the master in terms of quality. Then there is the solitary version of "What Goes on" which is obviously different from the version on Live 68 and was (incorrectly) dated on my copy as "26th October 1968".
It has always frustrated me that while the Professor/Boston Tea Party recordings are all very well documented in terms of dates, the Klimek/Cleveland recordings are just the opposite. It's as if someone has set out to deliberately confuse us all as to the exact dates and set lists for those shows.
But I am pretty sure that the Klimek/Cleveland recordings were in at least limited circulation in the early 1970s. Local Cleveland bands like the Original Mirrors were playing "Foggy Notion" live some years before it was eventually bootlegged on vinyl in 1976.
Anyone got anything to add? I will try to compare my various cassette versions over the weekend.

So that would mean that Live 68 is better than Uptight. Because PSAS surely sounds better than Uptight? I had originally thought that Uptight was a repress of Live 68.Mark wrote:I'm suggesting Simon may be mistaken re the comparative merits of Ps&S and Live 68. rnranimal. Thanks ? I thought it might have implied lineage.rnranimal wrote:The open end of the arrow means greater than. I don't recall whether Peel sounds better than Live '68, but he's correct that Problems sounds worse than either.

Has anyone got a needle-drop of Live '68? I made a needle drop of three Uptight tracks a few years back I could share..

You're welcome. Yes, lineage is also shown that way. In that case, I always saw it as the arrows moving in the right direction to show the next step. However, I guess it could also be showing that the lower generation is better than the higher. Never really thought about that until now.iaredatsun wrote:rnranimal. Thanks ? I knew that PSAS could not have lead to Problems, which is why I was not sure what was going on. I use '>' as greater than in computer programming and '>>' also means something - bitshift - so perhaps I'd never really thought of '>' as simply short-hand for 'better than'. Makes perfect sense now!rnranimal wrote: You're welcome. Yes, lineage is also shown that way. In that case, I always saw it as the arrows moving in the right direction to show the next step. 3rd outtakes and missing recordings?
Speculating on outtakes and songs that might show up on the set.
I was looking at the list of recordings in Alfredo's post:
http://www.velvetforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4153
1. Nothing extra listed for the 3rd sessions. But there are not two versions of Some Kind of Love listed either
(And note that, the MGM list has two versions of Here She Comes Now and we didn't get the extra one on WLWH set.)
2. I wonder whether any of these listed missing recordings will turn up?
Sandy Sex (odd title as it rhymes with Candy Says),
Steve´s Tune,
War-ho (Sounds like 'Warhol' - another title for Andy's chest?)
Sad Song.
(Love to hear the early version of Sad Song especially if it is like the early Lou Reed solo demo version)
3. Lastly what is the reference that Sterling made in an interview to a whole album recorded in LA and that the tapes got lost on their way back to NY????? I can't find the link. But all the known '4th' stuff was recorded in NY. So what is that LA story about?
