Andy Warhol - Velvet Underground 1968 Boxing Style Concert Poster & Ticket
University Of Denver 2/22/68 - Incredibly rare 1968 14" x 22" cardboard boxing style poster for an Andy Warhol speaking engagement. He is pictured on the poster and also listed on the bill as The Velvet Underground & Nico, but they did not appear.
The group was listed on the poster probably due to a misunderstanding (or optimism) by the University Of Denver Student Union, who organized this appearance. The Velvet Underground did perform at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts two days later.
The students made this striking red and orange silkscreened poster, which apparently is the only one known to exist! It was removed from a wall at the university by an attendee and also included is his original used ticket for the event (corner torn off).
This event was one of the make-up shows of the "1968 Andy Warhol Lecture Tour". Warhol was obligated to appear because after he began his brief university tour in 1967, it was soon discovered that he had sent an imposter to speak in his place, one of his Superstars, Allen Midgette. As a consolation, Warhol agreed to appear himself at eighteen different college venues from January 16th to April 2nd (for a total payment of $13,000).
Also appearing with Warhol were his "spokesmen", Paul Morrissey and Viva. According to the student newspaper press account, the event consisted of projecting two reels of Warhol?s films over each other, followed by a Q & A session, during which Viva and Morrissey did most of the talking (as was typical for Warhol). The performance was not well received by the students. As the reporter Don Allen observed in the Clarion student newspaper, "Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. Ask a straight question, get a stupid answer".
We contacted both The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and the University Of Denver Library Archives about this poster and the event and greatly appreciate their research and assistance. Neither facility has one of these posters in its archives. The Museum had never seen an image of it before and we couldn't find any Velvet Underground collector who owns one.
Poster has small tack holes in the corners and a light water stain along the left edge. There was a 1" round area of residue below Warhol's photo, which has now been restored. This was the only restoration we felt necessary.
This is a fantastic looking poster and a great Warhol/Velvet Underground collectible.
