The Matrix Tapes were discussed on these forums in 2006 when some of the sampler tracks became available.

Eight 30 minute 1/2 inch 4 track tapes.
There are 43 songs on these tapes but only 22 unique titles.

Original 4 track tapes mixed down to DAT around 2002
Sampler made, probably for use during negotiations for a release

Notes by Olivier Landemaine on sampler of some of the tapes...

4. Black Angel's Death Song (3:36) [same as Quine 3] 23/11/1969

I know people are excited about the Matrix tapes and I think it's the thing they need to sell this box. I mean, we've heard the remastered Valentine from 2012 and we've heard a remastered Closet from Sundazed (albeit mono). So, they need the Matrix to make this attractive. BUT....

I want a goooood sounding version of La Cave Oct 2nd (actually 4th?) (as featured on the Problems CD and Uptight LP) .

The one where Lou is on lead and Yule is still feeling his way - basically doing Cale's bass parts.
Beginning To See The Light still swings like the Cale studio version does and we get a raucous energetic sound (Foggy, What Goes On, Can't Stand It, Sister Ray) plus many of the songs from 3rd. It has everything and was recorded just one month before they started the album, and acts as a bridge between the old VU and the new VU.

We also know they (UMG) got a good sounding version as they used it on the Point Slowly and See Boxset for Lou's insane guitar version of What Goes On.

They still rocked at that time. Later they became a bit more, well, polite.

So, that's what I want on the Super Deluxe 3rd.

Are we sure they didn't just source that from the "Live '68" bootleg or something? When the Bootleg Series was being planned, some years after the PSAS box set, they hadn't tracked down Jamie Klimek who made the original recording, although things might have changed since then.

It would definitely be good to have this show in good quality though. I think even my old cassettes of it sound better than "Problems In Urban Living", although obviously nowhere near as good as the stuff on "Live '68" or "Pale Blue Eyes" from "And So On".

I forgot it was a Klimek tape - does that mean it was a cassette? Doesn't the PSAS version of WGO sound better? I don't have Live '68, just the Uptight album. Where did the Problems In Urban Living CD makers get the whole gig from? A VUAS tape?

I have "Live '68" but unfortunately my turntable is out of action at the moment, so I can't do a comparison with PSAS. The whole gig has been circulating for quite a long time. I got a copy on cassette in about 1982. One of my copies is actually slightly more complete than Problems In Urban Living, as it includes a bit of tuning up and chat before WGO starts.

I'm pretty sure the PSAS version of WGO sounds a lot better than Live '68...

I think you may have misremembered! If anything it's Live 68 > Peel Slowly and See >>>>>> Problems in Urban Living

I had a cassette in the mid-90s that sounded much better than Problems, but my deck ate it not long after. Are there any copies floating around in digital (of the full gig) that sound better than Problems? That CD doesn't sound very good, even after it's speed corrected.
