Rosie Lee UK wrote:If you put a store bought CD in your player, the times will also vary from the tracklist's. Each device (car player, computer, discman) reads the tracks slightly differently. Some devices actually count several seconds into the following track.
Though I'm just starting to explore the Velvet Underground's officially unreleased work, I just want to add that from my experience with other unofficial material, you can't totally rely on documented running times, especially when analog tape is involved. Tape decks can vary quite a bit in speed (even those handled by professionals), and the problem gets worse when the tape is dubbed down over and over again on various decks. The problem can get even worse if someone tries to pitch correct something to what they believe to be correct without the benefit of sheet music or some correctly-pitched reference recording played in a matching key. I haven't heard any previous editions of this excellent material Rosie Lee has shared, so it may not be the case here, but it's something to think about whenever you listen to an audience recording of any show belonging to any artist.
Thanks again to Rosie Lee. If Clinton Heylin ever updates his "Bootleg" book (highly recommended), people like Rosie Lee deserve a mention.
