Cheers. When I get time, I'll do a comparison to see if there's any music panned to the centre that we're losing along with the voices - not that there's anything we can do about that without a whole lot more patience and skill than I have.

I've wondered before who is actually playing on this. Alderson has said he doesn't think it was the full band - maybe the Poor Richard's line-up, so no Lou? It was only a week or two after that so he could still have sick. I can hear 2 lots of percussion, maybe a viola drone, and 2 guitars, one of which sounds like it could have been played by someone who had never held a guitar before. So perhaps Maclise, Moe, Sterling, Cale, Nico?

Richard Alderson, engineer at RLA Studios where Noise was recorded. I tracked him down a few years ago and he answered a few questions by email.

Mark,

Firstly, thanks for pulling back the layers and letting us hear this.

Secondly, this is quite the most unlistenable thing that you've ever been involved with. That's sort of a compliment :)

The drumming is odd. Either the drummer is performing some very tight drum rolls, or the snare drum skin is rattling with a bass vibration. What do we think? Could either Angus or Moe do drum rolls?

Shocked to hear it was recorded in a studio! I presumed someone had just turned up with a tape recorder to tape a tuning up session or something!

Having listened with headphones on, I'd say it's a drum roll on a fairly big drum. I don't know but my money's on Maclise.

It's a shame that with this out-of-phase stereo process, you lose the stereo separation when you get rid of the central channel.

If you listen to the whole album (it's on Spotify and Bandcamp), most of the tracks run along from one another - I tend to think of it as a "happening" where the radio commentary is the central thread and various people come in and out doing bits of music in the background. Then again, the VU part does sound like it could be faded up from a longer performance.... hmmm.

I've done further declicking of the most recent version of the file. It's still not 100% pristine, but is now quite close. This version is labeled "REV2," and can be grabbed from https://drive.google.com/open?id=1TYx1T ... 3K8vEBAZjZ.
