Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
Just got a chance to listen to this... LOVE the "new" song! It's awesome. Thanks to the uploader SO VERY MUCH!!!
One thing... Is it just me or does it seem as if someone other than Moe is on drums during Sister Ray? It just doesn't sound like her "style" to me. Let me know if I'm crazy on this or not. But, anyway it's awesome!
And, by my count, that makes at least 20 versions of Sister Ray that we have in circulation (including -- if you want to -- the ones from "Final V.U.") Please let me know if I'm wrong here, too. I'm trying to get a copy of every version of Sister Ray that I can get my grimy little hands on!

Wow, just downloaded the songs. I'm Not A Young Man Anymore is awesome. This board is quite the place for Velvet fans, first the Rosie Lee tapes, some other exclusives, and now this! Excellent!

Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
My speculation is that's someone else going ape there. I don't recall hearing Moe do anything like that on any other recording. She usually smashes out straight-ahead relentless rhythms, non? I haven't had a close listen yet, but I'm wondering if they had a bit of a swap around towards the end of SR. Cale moving from bass to organ (is there organ?!?), Moe moving from drums to bass (I believe I read somewhere that Moe plays (some?) bass on the Sweet Sister Ray recording, or was it that show where Lou was in hospital and Cale took over vocals with Angus on drums??), so Stirl or Lou on drums(!). I dunno... Still in shock this thing has finally turned uptarbaby2 wrote: One thing... Is it just me or does it seem as if someone other than Moe is on drums during Sister Ray? Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
Seems Moe played bass more than often. At Poor Richards (see Ronald Nameth EPI movie) a whole week could mark her debut on bass duties. After that we have the SSR recording. While Cale is on Organ she moves to bass giving us the chance to hear a drumless VU. There is also a pic I posted in a previous post (67-68 pics) of Moe playing bass at the BTP.PhantomRaspberryBlower wrote: My speculation is that's someone else going ape there. Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
sister ray on this disk SHREDS. absolutely twisted. i can't imagine what the crowd would have thought seeing this!
the same guy who told me that the release of this (although he said "complete") was imminent told me that quine had offered polydor some more live stuff and they turned it down, because apparently (according to this unnamed guy) lou himself said, "no more live velvets."
my theory: coupla hundred of these will be put on vinyl and sell out. then the genuinely "complete" version comes out, with clean, "no vinyl pops" sound, on silver CD and we pay for it all over again.
it's pretty funny because a few years back the same guy was bitching to me that his buddy had slowed production of his, well, product, because he was pissed that "You put a CD out, and the next day it's all over the internet!" the producer in question apparently makes his stuff up and sells it to japan, who love shit like this!
hat to use the word "apparently," so much, but... : )

Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
I don't mind if a CD comes out. Even the 'evil' bootleggers have to see a return on their investment and without them we wouldn't have even had this recording (or a bunch of others over the years). But funny how it comes out and then people start talking about having had a first gen DAT copy on their shelves for hundreds of years.brmc69 wrote:my theory: coupla hundred of these will be put on vinyl and sell out. then the genuinely "complete" version comes out, with clean, "no vinyl pops" sound, on silver CD and we pay for it all over again.
The only thing I minded is that I paid ?21 for a green copy and then find that there's a ?12 black copy. But I don't mind too much as I was eager and wanted it there and then. (I do wonder if the black copy is less crackly than the green?)
I will always buy a CD or LP even if I can download a lossless audio file as I'm old fashioned and like material artefacts (they sound better and has anyone really ever got any pleasure from looking at a FLAC?).
