So, you've never heard CD1 of PSAS?Doctor Bob wrote:Acoustic performance of the Velvet Underground?mg196 wrote: acoustic performance woulda been awesome. If we are to belive Bockris, Lou fu*ked that one up as well.
You people make me sick
As for Bockris...that man is scum.

And if anyone played a part

When the term "Classic lineup" is used when referring to a band, it usually refers to the original lineup and not the quality of the music.Pernod time wrote:1. There is no "classic" lineup, I am the biggest fan of John Cale, but the 2 Velvets albums without him are on the same level as the first 2.
Oh, how can anyone NOT like acoustic VU?! As mentioned above, the PSAS disc is GREAT! So is Bataclan, which I feel has the DEFINITIVE version of Berlin (I know, not VU) and I'm Waiting For My Man is excellent.
As for Bockris being scum, you're 100% correct. Do a search for my thread on him appearing on the American show, The Peoples Court!

Well, maybe Dr Bob's rant was more against the "unplugged" mentality in general, when a bunch of conceited musicians toss about before an assembly of adoring fans.
But as far as songwriting is concerned, the acoustic gig is like the litmus test. I think it was Johnny Marr who said once that when he wanted to be sure the song was good, he'd play it over and over again on an accoustic guitar. (Obviously he wasn't doing that anymore by the time he was in Electronic)
Take WLWH, surely what everybody loves about this LP is the bitterender attitude, the chaos, the noisy racket foreshadowing 35 years of alternative rock? Well I'm sorry, but play "I heard her call my name" on accoustic guitar and it's still a classic; give it a bossa feel and I'm buying your demo mate. The words are still brilliant, the tune still is as powerful: a great pop song. One day Robbie Wiliams (no relation to mad mary Williams, sadly) will make a soft rock cover of "I heard her call my name" and it will go number 1. And I'll be pretty pleased, especially when I'll think of all the Velvety "drone or bust" purists.

Obviously its all hypothetical and retrospective and basically a pointless topic in a way, but I have to say I disagree with you. I think fitting both Cale and Yule into those songs would make them clunky and give them too many layers and basically make it sound less authentic. I think the last thing Sweet Jane needs is Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison and Doug Yule all playing guitar on it, very few bands need three guitarists and the VU is certainly not one of them (IMO), one of the beautiful things about the band is the the simple and elegant arrangements of the songs.Mark wrote:I'm sure that if Cale and Yule had both been there, they're both such versatile musicians that I'm sure they would have found some way of expanding the arrangements so everyone had something to do - eg, for Sweet Jane Cale could have taken bass and Doug could have filled in with some extra guitar

Err there's a difference between a collection of demos from the 60's and a live worldwide broadcast courtesy of MTV in the 90's isn't there??jimjim wrote: So, you've never heard CD1 of PSAS?
Regardless I was being slightly facetious in the first place and if there was an unplugged performance no doubt I would have owned it and enjoyed it...but the fact remains that acoustic unplugged performances for cable TV are hardly what the VU were about...
