A biting Crawdaddy article on the collaboration with a couple of videos- ummm, more rehearsal time perhaps needed at the point these were shot at?

Metallica ? they sound so polite. I suppose this means that a Cannibal Corpse collaboration is now out of the question?

It's awesome because Lou is not at all the most elderly looking member of the combination

The October issue of Mojo has a big feature on Loutallica with a load of photos/ and interview. Lou is in good form with a fair scattering of humourous asides.
All the photos are of course in b&w... best to show off his increasingly gnarled visage.

The album with Metallica was originally conceived to be reworkings of Lou's more obscure songs... but the week before the sessions Lou completely changed that and suggested recording a set of 10 new songs he'd written for a Berlin production of 19th century German dramatist Frank Wedekind's 'Lulu Plays', Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box.
God this sounds grim already but i will proceed....
Basically, from this Mojo piece, it seems that the songs were bodged together really quickly and then recorded very quickly too. Metallica were aghast at this approach as usually they spend around 4 months getting the drum sound right.
More than half the songs were written and actually finished within a week.
Lou says "i wanted to stay away from the A-B format. And stretch it, come back, change the tempo.... they sometimes didn't even have they key, it could be wherever. You're getting the real feel. This is not a studio production. You're hearing it like we heard it"
The article goes on - "the extent to which the process has succeeded largely depends on one's appetite for Lou Reed declaiming over relentless dirge-riffing, but what's beyond doubt is the albums remarkable fusion of extreme components".
The albums centrepiece - a 19 minute long track called 'Junior Dad' is apparently the highlight and the one track where Lou drops the 'hammy' delivery.
I'm not exactly waiting with baited breath on this one but the Mojo piece is certainly worth reading.
