I had to go for Quine - I agree it's harder to love than 1969 (and it's so very NEW!) - but there's so much there (the Sister Ray's total over one and a half hours on their own!)

It's also got 'Black Angel Death Song' and some Moe vocals, what more could you want?

I'll go for the '69 Live and its close feeling
Although I get my kick with the Quine tapes and its rarely played songs
and with the pure rock'n roll set that Live at Max's Kansas City is,
'69 Live is total joy for me (I wish there'd be "Candy says" on it)
But forget the live from '93

And the mix... Why Reed so far up and Sterling so far down?

Yonks back I found an interview with Dean Wareham, possibly called "Children of the Velvet Underground" (tho I may be confusing two different things here) in which he talks about Sterling being lower in the live mix at his own request.

1969 live gets mine...

Heroin- tears of ecstacy
Ocean- drowning in the waves of rhythm guitar
Sweet Jane- all innocence and heartbreak
I'll Be Your Mirror- ignore the vox, listen to the gorgeous guitar figure (and cute skip at 1:03)
What Goes On- you wish it would never end, huh?

Me too. When I first got it, "Ocean" hit me like a train. Unbelievably beautiful. Also monster versions of "White Light/White Heat" and of course, "What Goes On." I give it the edge over Quine only in that it's more concise, you can sit down and get into it all in one sitting. Then again, sometimes you really love the neverending feast that is Quine. Tough call, the two are both excellent.
