I dont want to keep going about the book but Richard Witts who wrote The Velvet Underground is a lecturer in music at Goldsmiths. I'm sure his book is some version of a thesis. It doesn't start with an abstract but it certainly has pages of notes and all sources referenced with bibliography and reads like a structured and serious attempt to place the VU in a socio-art-historical context.

Also on of the articles in Companion is a musicological analysis of Sister Ray. It's by Jeff Schwatz.

That was the one I was talking about. And I'll have to check out the Witt book.
