Who is recording the VU at Delmonoico´s?
Re: Who is recording the VU at Delmonoico´s?
The story I got on the Seattle tape was that some person who is a business man was a fan of
the opening band. The opening band tape their set and left the tape running for the VU.
This guy has been approached about the tape but refers all questions to his 'lawyer.'
The same person is also not a VU fan, but got the tape from someone involved with the
opening band. The owner is apparently a big Beatles fan, a group many of you may
not have heard of. I think this guy wants money for this tape. Most of this
info came to me from Olivier Landemane, and his has some info on his priceless site.
""also I hadn't known that the existence of the "Seattle" soundboard had been confirmed? Has anyone any more (hard) info on this fabled item?""

were they in attendance at the texas international pop festival? august 30 through september 1, 1969?lurid wrote:I've commented on the "Texas grassy knoll" pic before - does anyone know exactly which "festival" the VU were playing at when that photo was taken? Who is filming/interviewing Sterling?
they definitely didn't play that one.
they probably didn't want to miss shiva's headband!

Doug took the pics while other band members were interviewed and filmed (he is not in any of the shoots). Then, it seems he handed his camera to someone else while they were playing to took the onstange shoots. Lou, Sterl and Moe are using same cloths as on the interview while playing, so we have to presume that is the very same day. If the did not played at the Texas International Pop Festival i would say that is not there.calaminehello wrote:were they in attendance at the texas international pop festival? august 30 through september 1, 1969?lurid wrote:I've commented on the "Texas grassy knoll" pic before - does anyone know exactly which "festival" the VU were playing at when that photo was taken? Is anyone in touch with Doug? (Sal?) I imagine he could answer these questions very easily and quickly.

Well according to a source, The Museum of Modern Art's Andy Warhol section, in cold storage, salmercuri wrote:When New York Art comes out in a few weeks you will see one of the most infuriatingly frustrating VU photos ever. Barbara Rubin is seen filming the band at Cafe Bizarre! Where oh where did her archives end up?

Re: Who is recording the VU at Delmonoico´s?
Good grief. I can't think of many '60s bands that were so badly preserved by the people who taped them. It's surprising enough that this minor underground band would attract so many tapers. But it's quite distressing that so many of them decided to keep the tapes to themselves!
I can understand Cale burying all his tapes unheard in storage. But it's baffling that folks like Klimek, Helm etc would decide to let their tapes rot, as well as being quite unhelpful to other VU fans. Why make the tapes in the first place?
It's also sad that our recordings tend to be bunched up in the early-Velvet or late-Velvet periods, and what must have been their best live year (with Cale '67/68) is mostly a black hole.
It's like a curse on the Velvets....
Sigh.... It's hard to be a VU fan.

Hey, you're in Portland. I am there most of the time myself.
Anyway if consider that bands that have the most stuff available also had the larger fanbase.
There was also a more communal feel amongst them. I am referring to the Dead, Led Zepplin
maybe even Bob Dylan. The VU were/are more distant, aloof, elitist and secretive. I think
that gets passed onto the fans. There is also that NYC vibe of the have and the havenots.

I think it is not hard to be a Velvet Underground fan. Everybody gives what he/she wants to give, one more, one less and one nothing. We can be satisfied with all what we've got this year and in the past from friends like lurid, mg196, Bottleg Companies and others. (sorry if I've forgotten a giver!)fangedesire wrote:Sigh.... Collecting is a thing that needs patience and time and I think the VU is not to compare with Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan or any other band. The only concert I really wanted to have are the "Matrix Tapes".
Otherwise I can understand the frustration of waiting. But a new year is coming and we will see what happens.
