Decide for yourself. It's "only" a rehearsal, but, well, torrent it, or something...

Ludlow, I disagree here. Listen closely through some high quality speakers. What I hear is "mother lover", much the way that Jerrry Lee Lewis used to use the same phrase as well as "mother humper". Now with it being recorded in San Francisco, one could make the argument that he is referring to the Mothers of Invention, but I doubt that. The end of the song is sprinkled with similar R&B phrasings. I have listened to it a number of times and "mother lover" is very clear. By the way, Ludlow- you were correct, the clarity on the Gymnasium songs, all the rehearsals, "Ocean" it's all revelatory and a gas to hear!

Hi bobldr,

Could well be, thoughod course I heard it as "Modern Lover", hence this topic. Close enough to mother lover, whatever that may be?? Modern Lover is a great turn of phrase ,IMO. MAybe JR heard (misheard) it that way? Could go either way, perhaps? Sorta like Lou, haha..

But hey, that's a great thing about Lou's phrasing, sorta picks up on the old quote by Fat's Domino - "One should never sing the lyrics too clearly".

Re: the actual CD, when I got my copy & heard it I thought I'd post my impressions on this forum. If it sucked I certainly would have said as much. And as regards a few intemperate comments I may have made hereabouts, I really ought to refrain from posting at 3AM. Sometimes the night just gets away from me.

At this point I will remark upon an aspect of the set that stood out for me, yet no one appears to have touched upon. The pics, adverts and articles in the booklet dig pretty deep. Didn't see any of them referenced on Oliviers site. Something to give the compiler credit for, tracking down previously undocumented original sixties material to pair with the content.

Well Ludlow, "mother lover" is a cleaned up "motherf***er" in my opinion. As for the booklet, I have not seen it. I dl'd all three discs online. Maybe someone can scan the artwork and make it available? That would be GREAT>
