yeah, i have the SR swan mix but was wondering if the whole album was done like that. the MFSL mix *is* great, isn't it? and i think i'm gonna make a play for the ebay piece (found it yesterday; couldn't remember the name of the swan cover album).
I'm know it's been said before in these pages but these aren't different mixes - they have been mastered differently. I do want to hear the MFSL WLWH though, as they're said to be uncompressed mastering jobs. I just saw one place asking $450 for it and haven't seen it for under $100!
Is there any place to get illegal FLACs of the MFSL version?
well, i've got shn's of the mfsl versions of wl/wh and vu&n that i got a few years ago...

brmc69,
thanks for the offer. I was lucky enough to get copies of both from some very kind people in these very pages a week or so ago. And I have really enjoyed them - an increased clarity and openness in sound that I felt I was missing in those recordings since I upgraded my hifi last year. Makes them sound very fresh and a pleasure to listen to.

Are you sure about that? I've never heard that mentioned before, and I can't find any other reference to it.

Well it could be one of those rumours that turns out not to be true but here is where I read it:

This is what the relevant post says:

The upcoming VU comp Gold will contain the unreleased original 1968 mixes of Stephanie Says and Temptation Inside of Your Heart. I really hate the early 80's mixes on VU and Another View but Stephine Says sounds OK to me. I'm curious to hear what the original mix sounds like. Now of only they would release the long rumored Deluxe Edition of the 3rd album and the 'lost 4th MGM album' I could die happy...
One thing that I find interesting is that the two "rough mixes" that are slated to be used on this collection happen to be the two Febuary '68 recordings from VU (the rest of the album comes from '69 sessions). These songs (with Cale) were never part of the "lost 4th MGM album", and it strikes me that the compiler of this set (presumably Bill Levenson) might be using this release to give these tracks a home prior to that LOST ALBUM release that has been hinted at in the past.
Bill Levenson also included an unlisted goodie for collectors when he used the rare "Swan Mix" of "Sister Ray" on the otherwise unremarkable 20TH CENTURY MASTERS collection.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Has anybody got a copy of the mfsl versions of the first two albums that they could share? I have wanted to hear that version of WL/WH for so long now!

[quote="nick257"]The Universal Masters Millenium collection has the swan mix of Sister Ray:

Having compared the mix on the millenium collection to the standard mix and the swan mix on the Twisted stars bootleg I now dont think that this is right. It sounds to me like the standard mix.

Bill L. is correct. We used the swan mix of SR on the Millennium Collection, with no compression either. I don't remember hearing a whole lot of difference between this and the regular mix, but that's what we went with.

Thanks for clarifying this issue for us Jeff - we really value your inside knowledge round here! My ears are obviously not very good at detecting the subtle differences between the two mixes!

as far as I can remember, the so-called 'swan mix' is not an alternate mix, but a different mastering of the original stereo mix... Good to know it is available on CD anyway!
