I'm happy everytime I see a new or reseeded vu torrent on Dime, although I hate when most people dont download it. :D

Has anybody seen the 2nd Episode of BBC Seven Ages of Rock? There's some vu footage that I have never seen before in it. But I dont know if it's rare.

I voted YES on the poll, but do search daily for material that is new to me.

I take your point over genuinely new material. But in the meantime there are plenty of compilations (Songs of Cave, Live at Boston Tea Party, Eternal Legacy, 1990, Ultra Rare Trax Vol. 4) and vinyl transfers (Evil Mothers, Paris 29.1.72, En Concert a L'Enfer, Orange Disaster, NYC, March of the Wooden Soldiers) that I hunt for. So I don't get bored.

I will never stop hoping though. Iggy made a good point about the acetate and ATP. You never know what might turn up. However, it worries me that the people who may have the kind of tapes that we all dream of, have no apparent inclination to release them while us die-hards are still alive! Perhaps oneday someone will clean out Lou's closet. But by then I may have given up and be too busy dribbling to care anymore.

As mg196 points out, unless properly stored, any tapes that may still be out there have probably turned to dust or goo by now anyway.

In the meantime I will go through my daily ritual (thank you Google) and also add to my collection of Johnny Thunders and Richard Hell material where I can. Discovered Dim Stars the other day - thanks taxine.

Happy Hunting.

Hey Jez, FYI, En Concert a L'Enfer is just a compilation of sorts, with some official material. From the VU page:

1. Femme Fatale / 2. No One Is There / 3. Frozen Warnings / 4. Janitor Of Lunacy / 5. I'll Be Your Mirror / 6.The Last Mile / 7. I'm Not Sayin' / 8. Temper.

1-5 : Lou Reed, John Cale & Nico, Bataclan, Paris, January 29, 1972 / 6-7 : Nico's first single, Immediate IM 003, August 26, 1965 / 8 : outtake from Cale's The Academy In Peril sessions, first issued on promotional compilation Troublemakers (Warner #PRO A 857, 1980).

See what I mean about the same material appearing over and over again?! The vinyl of this disc has the Bataclan tracks running too slow. Whoever issued the CD corrected the problem.

Take your point entirely.

I think they're all compilations of stuff that's already out there, and that I probably have already. The only one off the top of my head with something a bit different on it is March of the Wooden Soldiers with 'Early Tuesday Morning Blues' on side one. A track that I've not been able to find anywhere else.

And track 8 on En Concert a L'Enfer might be hard to find elsewhere - it's an outtake from a promo isn't it? Just waiting for all the JC fans to put me straight there.

"Temper" is also officially available on John Cale's "Seducing Down The Door" 2-CD collection (Rhino R2 71685, 1994).

Jesus! What are you complaining about? In the last 6 years alone, we have gotten the Quine Tapes, the Final VU box-set, the Norman Dolph Acetate on various boot, the Flowers of Evil boot with real great 1970-stuff, the full-length soundtrack from Symphony of Sound (we don't need our shitty VHS-copys anymore). We've gotten the complete Max's tapes, also on numerous boots, The Loaded sessions, the re-release on CD of the mono VU & Nico album, the brilliant End Cole Ave "first night" boot, the Warhol tapes and last years absolutely incredible series of bootlegs from Nothing Songs: Ultimate Mono & Acetates/Stereo, After The White Heat, the remastered Guitar Amp Tape/Move Back CDs. These are bootlegs from heaven man! Even Polygrams release of the Gold compilation was worth buying, for the original mixes of Stephanie Says/Temptation Inside Your Heart. Please fill in if I missed one. If the coming 6 years hold as many releases, I'll be more than happy. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking for the original Record Plant mixes. Or the MGM Music Factory LPs. Or get all the Afterhours tapes. I mean, there's always something for us die-hards to search for. I'll never stop looking for unheard VU-sounds. I'm way too hooked.

Speaking of the Afterhours tapes... there are so many of them that I have not seen offered / shared anywhere! Someone has to have copies of them. If anyone reading this does have any copies... PLEASE SHARE!!!

Thanks to mg196 and olandem for the info.

To be honest, I have'nt even given up on there being one last get-together (with a Sterling stand-in obviously) let alone no more new material. Maybe a 50th anniversary bash? :D

As for the Afterhours Tapes, anyone tried getting in touch with Mike Kostek? The VUAS are a secretive bunch. Velvet ninja's.

Nobody was really complaining about anything.
In the last 6 years alone, we have gotten the Quine Tapes...
Absolutely true.
...the Final VU box-set...
Most people on the forum do not consider this material to be Velvet Underground. The post-Lou VU is considered by most to be VU in name only - a record label decision to squeeze every possible cent out of the name.
...the Norman Dolph Acetate...
100% true.
...the Flowers of Evil boot with real great 1970-stuff...
Material on Flowers of Evil has been around for a long time. CD1 is culled from the Max's performances that have been circulating in various forms for years, some chopped up, some not. CD2 material has also been around for a very long time.
...the full-length soundtrack from Symphony of Sound (we don't need our shitty VHS-copys anymore)...
You're right, I dont need the VHS anymore, but the point is I have it...and HAVE had it for quite some time.
We've gotten the complete Max's tapes, also on numerous boots...
They've been around, though finally we got an "official" release. If you were lucky enough to grab the 1st promo release you got even more.
...The Loaded sessions...
That was really awesome!
...the re-release on CD of the mono VU & Nico album, the brilliant End Cole Ave "first night" boot...
Again, this stuff has been out there for a long time (since the original mono release). Granted it is now available in better form (some would say, anyways). There is nothing new and revelatory. The First Night was released on CD in 1993.
...the Warhol tapes...
That was very cool. Just ask Rosie Lee!
...last years absolutely incredible series of bootlegs from Nothing Songs: Ultimate Mono & Acetates/Stereo, After The White Heat, the remastered Guitar Amp Tape/Move Back CDs. These are bootlegs from heaven man!
Everyone here knows my opinion of these Nothing Songs garbage compilations. They consist of material that has been available for a very long time (aside from the Playhouse 1993 discs that just came out). Here is a quote from a previous post:

These "Nothing Songs" pressings are not new sources, nor are they remasters. They are blatantly bootleged Dimeadozen.org torrents, which are FREE bootlegs. As for the Warhol Tapes disc, well...that was posted here in its entirety in MP4 format and not too long after was released by "Nothing Songs" as part of some set. I feel bad for the suckers that got ripped off on that purchase.
Go for it dude, we are all encouraging you! The point of my post was that fan-recorded tapes are going to become increasingly rare as every day goes by. I mean, original mixes are great...but goddamn, I have heard those takes 10,000 times already...now a new mix is out. Yawn...

The stuff in the record company vaults (and the artists' private collections) is safe for eternity (well, you know what I mean). Loaded sessions, remasters, re-releases...what was it The Smiths sang? Oh yes, Reissue, Repackage, Repackage... . Who here did not already have the VU & Nico? Of course, I dumped my old copy and bought the remaster, but there was nothing new there...just better sound.

I was talking about the reel-2-reels hiding in some 65-year old dude's attic!! I certainly consider myself a die-hard, as a wall of bootlegs will attest to, but I am also a realist. The simple fact remains that material hiding in people's basements and attics is going to become increasingly difficult to find...and then release.
