It's definitely still active, I logged on yesterday. I think the WAVs have gone now but will check.

I found the listing for the torrent up on Dime, but it seems it was banned for being lossy. Someone did a spectral analysis and figured out it was a tape copy of .mp3 files. Not sure if the files here are the same as the ones in the torrent that was on Dime.

So how come I can still log in to it? And it's not coz I set the account up in the first place, coz I didn't.

Can someone confirm that the torrent referred to features genuine flac versions, and not just a flac copy of a CD compiled from lossy MP3s (i.e. the 'At The Factory - Warhol Tapes' CD)?
Maybe it is something with IP adresses, maybe we all have to log in with a UK ip-adress....
i will try this....(yes i can chance my ip to whatever i want.)

In that case it'll just be a copy of the "At The Factory - Warhol Tapes" CD - to be fair it may be a lossless copy of that, but as that was compiled from the Rosie Lee MP3s it's just a lossless copy of lossy files!

My copy - at least the on my hard drive is dated April 2007. All the files are FLAC and have the following note (edited).
The Velvet Underground
Title: All Tomorrow's Parties

Lineage: Master Warhol Museum CD -> CD(gen1) -> .wav -> CD(gen2) -> .aiff -> .flac (level 8)

This is the unedited, unfiltered, full-file All Tomorrows Parties bootleg.
The mp3s I have were made from the same CD and are compressed at around 196kbs with the following note. (I guess they are the ones from the 'brigid' email account.)
mp3s made from a lossless copy of the warhol museum CD. Not from the bootleg whose cover artwork is included.
Of course, there's one person around here who knows all this better than any of us. I could wetransfer the FLACs tonight, as a temporary solution. 391Mb zip.

The Rosie Lee MP3s were posted on here at 192kbps in 2004 (can't remember exactly when), maybe in WAV format, I can't remember. The "ATF - Warhol Tapes" CD was compiled from them and released in 2005. I'm still not convinced that any other releases are genuine flacs from a different source or simply flac copies of the "ATF - Warhol Tapes", which would mean somewhere along the line they were lossy. Even if they are taken from the same CD used by Rosie Lee (or a copy of it), that might have been copied in MP3 originally. I'm not saying a genuine flac copy doesn't exist, I just don't know if it does.
The version of Track 7 (Blues Instrumental) from the Rosie Lee tapes was incomplete for some reason, so somebody fairly close to the band (some of us can remember who) kindly provided a substitute for it. That might be flac...
What's a "wetransfer"?!

Mick, if you tell me it was 2004, I'll take you word for it. I just don't remember it being that long ago. The FLACs I have came from the time Rosie Lee herself first posted them here. The documentation I quoted above is included with them and clearly states the lineage of the FLACs as being direct lossless copies of the original CD and is signed by Rosie Lee's altered-ego. They are going to be better than the 192kbps version that were posted later, if that makes much difference (given the quality and circumstance of the original recording - and I've never compared them). Anyway, I can repost them via wetransfer.com if anyone wants them. I would PM a link by request during the next week ? you click it, you download the files.

This was the specific comment on Dime: "I don't want to upset anybody, but I can't believe this comes from a lossless source. It looks to me like a tape copy of the mp3 files, there's an all too obvious drop of the signal at 14 kHz. Just take a look at the frequency and spectral analysis. By the way, when you ask your computer to do this type of analysis, choose the larger number available where it reads FFT size, if not the results may be misleading." There were some screenshots at some point apparently, but they are no longer there. I can't comment on this myself, but this was enough for Dime to ban the torrent.

hkmartin. My advise, don't bother with the torrent or the analyses. These will be as real as the real things allowed, if you want them.

The reason I'm so convinced it was 2004 is because I specifically joined this Forum because of the Rosie Lee thread, that was in May 2004 and from memory about the first 4 or 5 tracks had been posted when I joined. I'll happily take the wetransfer version if it's on offer though, although I completely agree that with recordings of this quality the whole flac vs mp3 debate is largely redundant anyway. And I certainly agree torrent analysis is a complete waste of time, I've always relied on my good old ears to judge these things!
At the time it was released it was claimed that "Dispatches From The Dream Factory" featured better versions than any previously available, but having never heard it I've no idea if that's true.
