I checked my factory pressed version and all the stated glitches are there. Still an outstanding boot - I Found A Reason is masterful.

Tarbaby2 - perhaps you could transfer your .rm file to .wav using something like the diskwriter plug in for xmms - I would think the equivalent is available for winamp it will write any media file it can play to disk as a .wav file - then it's a simple job to edit it in any audio app (I use and recommend audacity on linux). If you are on mac or windows I'm sure others can recommend equivalents.

from memory the 1st pressing of "the first night" was 1000 copies. I have copy #0003 and it does have the glitches as described. I dont know what caused the problem, but the source for this set was a DAT copy of the master tape. That DAT was supplied to Aulica and they presumably made the glass masters from that.
The "extra" tracks (probably) came from tapes made after the shows. The "Blue Velvet Jam" track is an extract from a ~90 min tape. I doubt if any of the VU feature on it at all - more likely their roadies + whoever was hanging around.....

No, Doug & Lou are definitely on the jam tape. If you listen carefully to the chatter between the"songs" you can make them out very clearly. Moe definitely isn't there as sounds like someone trying to use her kit, badly. Not sure about Sterl though.

ok sean- I'll try to dig that out and listen out for lou or doug. the extract on the 2CD set is about the most interesting part of the longer version of that jam tape I heard....(but still pretty boring!) what i dont know is why one of the "end cole ave" Sister Rays is cut/faded out. I assume the sound engineer ran out of tape. Also why "mix up" the 2 "sister ray"s??? Somewwhere I have the email address of Jeff ??, who made the original tapes (and still has the masters) - If I can find it I'll ask him.

Glitches on "The First Night"

Post by dsulpy »

The sound of the digital glitches on "First Night" are familiar to anyone who's used DAT - it's a glitch in the DAT which was used to master the CDs. Not much anyone can do about it except make a cleaner DAT master from the original. Digitally editing them out would simply leave an annoying gap in the sound, rather than an annoying noise.
