Speaking of Warhol

Post by Stephen Says »

I read a book about him a while ago & remember another artist who entered the picture for some time, then died of a heroin overdose... His name was Morrissey? What was the deal with him; was he Andy's lover?

No, I don't think he was ever one of Warhol's lovers... He was sort of the manager of the EPI, independent film-maker. I think he was brought into the factory circle because he was a film director, he was seen as an organizing type who was looking to make money. Have you read the book 'Factory Made: Warhol and the Sixties'? I liked it.
Don't you know you'll stain the carpet?

Yes, I need to get around to reading those VU-related books. I was curious about the 60's Morrissey mostly out of my love of the Smiths.

Yeah, first time I saw the album cover for The Smiths with the Dallesandro still credited to Paul Morrissey, I wondered if there was a link... (Mind, I was 15 and there was no Internet to verify/falsify)

Best Morrissey-related anecdote was when I picked up a Morrissey-Mullen 12" EP from the remaindered section thinking it might be a pre-Smiths project of our hero... Thankfully the shop assistant let me listen to it before buying. I quickly learned that blaring instrumental jazz fusion was not my thing nor could it possibly have anything to do with the Mancunian bard ;-)

Being a hardcore Smiths fan, I should know this, but is Morrissey his real name? If not, maybe he named himself after the EPI one. It could be a little getting-close-to-Andy gesture, along with the Warhol-style cover of Meat Is Murder.

Our hero was born Steven Patrick Morrissey, so no Warholisms there.
