Venus in furs live with Cale. Good sound but incomplete
Re: Venus in furs live with Cale. Good sound but incomplete
Sounds like it's from June 3, 1967, Philip Johnson Glass House, New Canaan, Connecticut, not yet on CD, just on tape I think.
Re: Venus in furs live with Cale. Good sound but incomplete
So it's a recording ever published ?
Re: Venus in furs live with Cale. Good sound but incomplete
if it's from the 1967 Philip Johnson "Glass House" show, then it originally appeared as part of the soundtrack to a German film about Merce Cunningham. The soundtrack had short exceprts from WFTM and Venus, both incomplete and with unrelated voiceovers. The film was shown on german TV back in the mid - 1990s and so far as I am aware, all circulating audio material came from a VHS recording of the film. I certainly circulated copies to a pile of folks. A friend of mine contacted the filmmaker who said that he had no more VU material than was on the film soundtrack....cue much gnashing of teeth!
And the film itself is very frustrating - at one point the camera pans through maybe 180 degrees while the VU are playing and it seems as if it stops just before they come into the shot - you can see everyone dancing to them but you never actually see them!

That youtube clip is from the January '66 Walter Cronkite news program focus on underground filmmakers, which included Warhol's factory and VU playing. There's also some of Heroin in the feature.
The 1967 Glass House performance was part of a benefit for Merce Cunningham and he talks over the VU's perfomance as part of an interview.

It is beautiful and frustrating to be a fan of the Velvet Underground

Yes because nobody in the group was (is) interested in taping, back catalog and so on, By chance we have some amateur recordings and some pros too, also because live recording in the U.S. was more developped for many reasons. But a lot has disappeared. Cale or the Warhol museum has some unreleased stuff, but it's doubtful they'll ever see the light of day.

I have had this excerpt of Venus in Furs for decades and always remembered it as being from January '66. I have seen and heard the excerpts frompeppergomez wrote:That youtube clip is from the January '66 Walter Cronkite news program focus on underground filmmakers, which included Warhol's factory and VU playing. the 1967 Glass House performances and remember Run Run Run and I'm Waiting for the Man and no Venus in Furs.

I think your memory has failed you Aral. I have a VHS copy of the complete July 1967/Glass House film and it only includes "Waiting" and "Venus". Definitely no Run Run Run.
Also, I don't think it is Merce Cunningham himself who is "talking" over the VU excerpts in the film - I think it is someone else talking about Merce Cunningham....whoever it is it is very very frustrating!

With the Boston 67 fragments we could do a terrific bootleg ! With a very imaginative title like 'live 1967' !
