Kinda related to my other post. I really get into "tributes" and covers of Velvet Underground songs. There are literally thousands of them, but I have a couple favorites:

"What Goes On", done by the Dictators; it's one of their extra tracks on the live album New York, New York, on which they also cover Iggy Pop's "Search and Destroy".

"White Light/White Heat", done by The Professionals on I Never Saw It Coming; post-Pistols band featuring Steve Jones and Paul Cook.

"Sweet Jane", done by Jim Carroll on I Write Your Name.

"Waiting For The Man", done live by Bauhaus on Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape.

"Here She Comes Now", done by Galaxie 500 (pre Luna band) on This Is Our Music.

Countless others - what are your favorites?

Bryan Ferry's done a couple of nice ones - a fusing of What Goes On and Beginning To See The Light on The Bride Stripped Bare, and many years later a cool loungy version of All Tomorrow's Parties. Both times he takes massive liberties with the material, but it works really well.

The Modern Lovers bashing through Foggy Notion has to get a mention as well!

My favourite is Pavement playing What Goes On, garage band heaven.
I also like Joy Division doing Sister Ray and Japan's version of ATP.

'Course any song on the Bettie Serveert live album, Plays Venus In Furs...!

"Run, Run, Run" and "Heroin", done by Echo And the Bunnymen, live, on disc four of their Crystal Days anthology. As noted above about Bryan Ferry, the lead singer for ETB takes tremendous liberties with the lyrics in the latter.

"Here She Comes Now", by Nirvana, and, "What Goes On", by Screaming Trees on the Fifteen Minutes tribute CD.

my personal VU-Cover Fav. is "Ride Into The Sun" by Luna.
It's on an EP afaik...
It starts with the vocals version and has an extended instrumental part at the end. Love that!

Very good!

Another one I like:

"I'm Set Free", covered by Yo La Tengo.

I think I've heard that. Is it the one where they mention something about Doug Yule on rhythm guitar and then mumble something about Toad the Wet Sprocket?

If it is, I didn't really like it much and I didn't think the vocals sounded like Stephen Malkmus (is it him singing?)

I second Luna's "Ride Into The Sun," it's on an EP called "Slide." Also, somebody's gotta mention the Cowboy Junkies' "Sweet Jane." I also love The Runaways, so here's a tip of the hat to their version of "Rock And Roll."
