The Gold set is actually a two cd set slightly interesting for its inclusion of previously unreleased original mixes of Stephanie Says and Temptation Inside Your Heart.

So now they have roughly twice as many greatest hits/ compilation albums as they have 'real' albums? And we get to buy a 2cd set for 2 songs (actually, alternate mixes)? That's much better than just releasing the original mixes of all those VU/ Another View songs on one 2-disc set! Thank you, Universal!

It is very cool that they're being released, although bloody annoying that (a) they're buried on a 2CD set amongst a load of stuff we already have, (b) of all the acetate mixes, these two tracks are closer to the '80s mixes than most of the others, and (c) they could quite easily have put the original mixes of all the other '69 tracks on there too!
And what about those other unreleased tracks from the 1969 sessions? Sweet-And-Twenty, Sad Song, Lonesome Cowboy...

Anyone pick this up? If so let us know how the Live 1969 tracks sound. Also, are any other VU and Another View tracks rough mixes? It seems odd that they would use rough mixes for Stephanie Says and Temptation Inside Your Heart and not Hey Mr. Rain...

the stephanie and temptation rough mixes are probably the "22 demos" versions that have circulated ever since Sterling made tape copies of his acetates and gave them to friends. None of the "20 whatever" tape variants of that collection of demos ever included "Mr Rain" to the best of my knowledge. A studio recording of "Mr Rain" was no more than a rumour prior to it's official release in the mid - 80s. Does anyone out there know of the existence of a rough mix version of "Mr Rain"?

Surley someone here has picked the Gold comp up by now! How do the Live '69 tracks sound? How do the common tracks sound compared to the Live '69 Cd's?

Well, I meant to give CD2 a listen to see
(a) what the "rough" mixes of Stephanie and Tempation are like, if they are really that different from the
VU tracks, and
(b) how the live 1969 tracks sound. But I haven't found a record shop yet (in the Netherlands) that has it in stock. As soon as I have, I'll post a report. Just one thing -- don't call me a "surly someone"! ;-P
