Robert Quine dead?

Somebody posted on a Clash forum that Quine died today, but didn't give any details. (The Voidoids opened for the Clash in '77). I'm looking around on the Net to confirm, but haven't seen anything. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Hey, google news didn't have any legitimate articles, but a couple of newsgroup posts I read said he died last month. To sum up, that's what I heard but it's not for sure yet. I hope not, poor guy.

yikes!!! there's a pop-up on his site that says
"It is with great sadness that we inform fans that Robert Quine has passed away. We will update this site as details on the loss of one of music's true originals become clear."

A friend just emailed this:
Was found dead in his apartment in NYC yesterday, he committed suicide. He
was sixty years old and had played with RIchard Hell & the Voidoids, Lou Reed,
Matthew Sweet, Lloyd Cole, Materia, Eno and others, he also cut an LP with Jody
Harris (Escape), and one with Fred Maher (Basic). He was depressed over the death
of his wife Alice last August. He also recorded the Velvet Underground on a hand
held cassette deck, the highlights were issued last year as The Quine Tapes a
three CD set. He was easily the most under rated musician in rock'n'roll.

I know that all members of this board will extend their deepest sympathies to his family and friends. It always struck me that Quine was one of the greatest (and earliest!) VU fans and that we owe him alot for getting the great Quine Tapes released.
I just loved his guitar playing I always thought he was very under-rated - there aren't many players who combine passionate punk sensibilities with precision and a style that is truely their own.

Robert Quine will be forever one of my favourite guitar players. His work in "The blue mask" alone stands him as such. But then you have the Voidoids albums: great, great art. Such a loss...

Apparently.
Yes, very sad. I don't know how I would cope with the loss of my wife.
A brilliant mind. He will be missed.

Crap news.
I thought Quine was brilliant when he played with Lou, and the fact he got to release "The Quine Tapes" of the 1969 Velvets makes him more of a hero to me.
I wonder if he's jamming with Sterling as we speak/write?

Just the most depressing news I've had to deal with in a long while. I'll mourn his loss as if he were my own brother.
