Simon, I do agree that the WL/WH from this set is a little on the quiet side. It really took me aback the first time I put it on. I don't have an original mono WL/WH LP, but I do have the "Ultimate Mono & Acetates" bootleg CD set, which has a (somewhat crackly) rip of mono WL/WH, and that version sounds very up-front and "forceful", for lack of a better word.iaredatsun wrote:leamanc wrote: I have been listening to the mono Sundazed WLWH and think it is cut very quietly. It's about 3/4 of the volume of usual LPs which surprised me. Do you think the same of the 3rd?
Look forward to hearing the 4th.
There is definitely a muted quality to the Sundazed version, which I did not like at all, at first. I've come around to it a little bit more of late, and now I think it might actually be a good way to introduce some less-adventurous folks to WL/WH. It brings the vocals way out in front, and overall has a more "traditional" rock and roll sound to it (as much as one can do that with WL/WH, anyway).
Now, for the 3rd, I actually find it more loud and up-front than I was expecting. I really like this Sundazed version, as it uses the Closet Mix, but has the dynamics of the Valentin Mix. To me, the 3rd is the best record in the set...but I've always been partial to this album, so there might be a bit of bias going on there.
I really do hope to get around to ripping the 4th album this weekend. We had to re-arrange my house, which is already too small for my record collection, to make room for the Christmas tree, and I've got the turntable unhooked for the moment. I have to re-arrange a few things to get the turntable hooked back up and get all my cords hooked up to the computer to do the rip, but it's looking like I might have the chance to do that Friday night. I will let you all know when it's hot and fresh off the turntable and turned into bits and bytes!
And thanks for the surprise in the PM, Simon...it's much appreciated!
