Ah OK, hadn't realized that. Does this mean there is no rough/early/whatever mix of "I Can't Stand It" that we know of?

not to the best of my knowledge. The first time I heard a studio version of "I Can't Stand It" was when VU was released.

Which is a damn shame, seeing as the songs that suffer worst from the '80s studio jiggerypokery (this, Lisa Says, Real Good Together) don't exist in any other version. Hence my sig of many years' standing...

I never understood your sig before now! Try the version of Can't Stand It on Sundazed's '1969'. A much dryer denser sound. Guitars are still panned, but makes it look like some of the '80s studio jiggerypokery' was added at mastering stage.
