Sweet Sister Ray reissue 2023

Post by MartinVU » 25 Jun 2023 10:23

There's a new SSR reissue out on vinyl. I've ordered a copy from Munsterama but it's cheaper on the link below (which i came across trying to find some more info on this).

https://www.opaquedynamo.com/product/th ... -vinyl-lp/

I'll report back once I get it.

Thanks for the info.

I got my copy this week. It’s a nice-looking gatefold production on matte card stock. (The original pressing was a single sleeve.)

The people at that supplier told me that they are expecting these two items this week:

2 other crucial Velvet Boots: BOSTON TEA PARTY JULY 11TH 1969 (2LP- ROOM ON FIRE) + I'M NOT A YOUG MAN ANYMORE - LIVE GYMNASIUM 67 (2LP-VUAS)
underground, overground

I got mine today. Sounds good I think, but I have only downloaded versions to compare it to.

I haven't had time to play it. But the cover art is very clean and looks like it's from the same films or plates as used for the original pressing. This is a new pressing and the matrix nos. have been scratched out. Be interesting to see how it sounds. It could of course have been sourced from the CD, but hopefully it's the original source used on the first vinyl pressing.

Have you had a chance to listen to it?

I've become highly addicted to the piece. Since it has no beginning and no end I just want to listen to it forever, so when it goes silent I just flip the record and on we go with no destination in mind. Surprised at how much more I enjoy it now than before, but this probably has more to do with me listening more attentively (and on a better sound system) when I listen to vinyl rather than the actual sound quality. Still curious about the source though.

I haven't noticed how groovy Moe's bass playing is before or how small parts remind me of The Gift. This recording is indeed a gift, so thank you Jamie Klimek!!! Even though I struggle to understand your choices, which sometimes keep me up at night (!), I am forever grateful for this and Live 68. And I will not stop dreaming that one day you'll share your recordings, stories and write liner notes for every new VU release (is it just me or are the liner notes to Live 68 miles ahead of any other VU release?) :P

I knew Mo played bass at Poor Richards but never heard or read that she did on SSR. Do we know for a fact that she did or are we just assuming so because of the lack of drums? It's a while since I've heard it and can't remember if there are clearly 3 other instruments as well as bass?

We're only assuming, I think. Should have mentioned that. There's clearly two guitars, bass and keyboards (that could have been higher in the mix), and no drums until the end when the song transforms into Sister Ray so eh what else could Moe have been doing while waiting?
