I knew Mo played bass at Poor Richards but never heard or read that she did on SSR. Do we know for a fact that she did or are we just assuming so because of the lack of drums? It's a while since I've heard it and can't remember if there are clearly 3 other instruments as well as bass?
She is credited with playing bass on SSR on the sleeve notes. That could be wrong though. John is credited with viola - does anyone hear viola on it?

The quote about Lou being on his white Gretsch, John on viola, etc. was originally on the sleeve notes for Live '68 and refers only to Heroin from the La Cave gig, which would have featured John on viola, not SSR, which probably doesn't (certainly I've never noticed it on there). Moe on bass wasn't mentioned on Live '68 but seems to have been added - possibly correctly - to the sleeve notes for the SSR album.

The bass playing stops shortly before the drums come in so it seems very plausible that it is indeed Moe.

I can't really hear the viola but there's short moments when I'm in doubt.. he could be droning a bit in the background and the quality of the recording obscures it. The organ/keys only enter in the second half so Cale could be playing viola before that or maybe he hasn't entered the stage yet.

Is there a tape source available for 'Heroin' ? It's not clear if CD 3 from the CBTTS 4 CD box set comes from tape or from live '68 vinyl.

I hear his viola pretty clearly but he's playing it in a different way than he usually did, it is only in passing, shorter high pitch swipes across the strings and not a sustained lower pitched drone. He doesn't paly it for that long before switching to keyboards. It's more of a repeating accent.

Has anyone compared this reissue with the original version? How does it compare sonically?
Thanks!

Also, is side 4 one semitone too fast on the reissue (i.e. plays an A flat/D flat instead of G/C), the way it is on the original?

Yes, I think so. I compared it to another version I have (guitar amp tapes on Tummy Tapes) and this one is over a minute shorter so makes sense if it's sped up. For the record I prefer the normal speed one but both works!

Just to be aware, ForcedExposure carries a new version that comes in a glossy cover with the same art but without the gatefold, despite being advertised on their site as a gatefold. This version is not listed on discogs.
